Buffalo, NY is known pretty much for the U.S. city you fly into to get to Niagara Falls. So people typically stay very close to the Falls, but don’t really do much in or go to Buffalo itself. Well, the next time you head this way, change that. In case you did not know, its the home of Buffalo Wings!
Buffalo, NY is located in the northwestern corner of New York state and at the Canadian border with the U.S. It’s just south of the Niagara Falls area.
How To Get Here
Amtrak serves the city with three stations. Additional details can be found here.
The nearest airport is the Buffalo Airport (BUF). This airport is served by the following carriers: American Airlines (AA), Delta Air Lines (DL), JetBlue (B6), Southwest Airlines (WN) and United Airlines (UA).
If you are already in the region you can take the drive. Just use a service like Google Maps for directions.
Where To Stay
I actually stayed at the airport as I had an early flight and did not want to bother with driving back from the city into the airport really early. But you should stay in the city for the best experience. The major hotel chains are adequately represented in Buffalo.

Where To Eat
The main thing to do here is eat Buffalo Wings at the Anchor Bar. Of course there are other places to eat as well. There’s even a Tim Horton’s due to the close proximity of Buffalo to Canada.
What To Do
Now, Buffalo, NY being an unfamiliar destination is not about going to Niagara Falls; its really about seeing what’s there to do in Buffalo itself. So here are a few things to do:
- Visit the place where Buffalo Wings were conceived, the Anchor Bar – there’s one in the airport, but its not the same as the original location
- Visit Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin D. Martin House Complex
- Visit Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site
- Visit the Buffalo Zoo
- Visit the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra
