Burgos, Spain; It’s Time To Visit

Most people end up here in Burgos, Spain when they do the Camino. But this find city is more than a point on the Camino, it holds its own and I had a special birthday here, so its a little more special.

 

Why Burgos, Spain?

Burgos, what a fine city. Dear to my heart as I was there when I turned 50. It’s a medieval town with Gothic structures, how can you not want to visit? Plus the Cathedral of Burgos is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Where

Burgos is located just north of Madrid. It is in the county of Castilla y Leon. Not too far from Salamanca and Valladolid.

How To Get Here

By Train

Renfe, the national rail of Spain has service between Madrid and Burgos. The ride takes anywhere from 2.5 hours to 4.5 hours.

By Plane

The closest airport is Madrid, Spain (MAD), the home of Iberia Airlines (IB). As Madrid is a major international airport in Europe, there are flights from almost every major area of the world. Once in Madrid, you can rent a car, take a bus or even the train to Burgos.

Where To Eat

This is Spain, so you will find good food everywhere. One of the restaurants I ate is the La Favoli Restaurant, but in this same neighborhood you’ll be able to find many places to east. Spain is a feast of food goodness; red wine and beef are the staples for this region.

What To Do

Burgos is a beautiful walking city. It’s medieval history is very apparent and so if the gothic Burgos Cathedral which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

There is also a Monastery here, Cartuja de Miraflores and Monasterio de las Huelgas and they are well worth visiting. A must see is the Museo de la Evolucion Humana, give yourself plenty of time though to check it out.
