57. Gibraltar, United Kingdom
Why Gibraltar, United Kingdom
I’m sure you’ve heard a lot about Gibraltar, but have you really been there? It’s a very interesting place to visit. Just being able to walk across the runway to enter the country should be a good enough “why?” for you.

Gibraltar is a part of the United Kingdom that is located at the tip of Spain and just across from Morocco in Africa. It is actually close to Jerez de La Frontera another Unfamiliar Destination; number 5.
How To Get Here
You cannot get to Gibraltar by train. You can however take Renfe to Jerez de la Frontera and then take a local bus to La Linea the Spanish town across the border and then walk across the border.
Gibraltar is served by the Gibraltar International Airport (GIB). The following airlines serve the country: British Airways (BA), EasyJet Airlines (U2), Monarch Airlines (ZB) and Royal Air Morac (AT).
You can take local buses in Spain to La Linea which is the Spanish town on the Spain side of the border and then walk across the border. Once you cross over the border, you can take the #5 bus into the City Center or just walk.
If you are already in the region you can take the drive. Just use a service like Google Maps for directions.
Where To Stay
When I went to Gibraltar, I actually stayed across the border in Spain as it was a tad pricey to stay in Gibraltar. I stayed at the hotel Miramar (I think)in La Linea right at the Spanish border. Here’s my view. I can see the airport runway and the cruise ship port.

Where To Eat
There is lots to eat on Gibraltar. I really enjoy ice cream, but it was a tad expensive so I passed on it. You will find that Gibraltar is just a tad more pricey than the rest of the U.K. And also, if you take out money from the ATM there, you will get Gibraltar pounds which are actually only legal tender on Gibraltar.

What To Do
I really enjoyed Gibraltar, but that’s because I’m an aviation geek. You can walk across the runway and watch planes land and take off among other things.
You can also take a cable car to the top of the rock, visit the botanical gardens, St. Michael’s Cave and the Mediterranean Steps to name a few.

Currency: Gibraltar Pounds which are 1 to 1 to the British Pound GBP
That’s especially helpful advice about the ATMs! We were there on a day too windy for the cable car, dang it.
You are welcome.
I have to go back and explore some more.
