I visited Henley-on-Thames and fell in love with it. I’m not sure why I love rivers so much, but I do and the Thames passes through this town. It is also the home of the Henley Regatta held in the summer time.
Henley-on-Thames is located as the name suggests on the Thames River southeast of Oxford and due west of London in the United Kingdom in the county of Oxfordshire.
How To Get Here
There is easy train service from most anywhere in the United Kingdom. Check the National Rail Web site for details. The journey time from London is about an hour; so easy peasy.
The nearest commercial airports for Henley is in Central London. Here you have a choice of six local airports with service from almost everywhere in the world: London-City (LCY), London-Gatwick (LGW), London-Heathrow (LHR), London-Luton (LTN), London-Southend (SEN) and London-Stansted (STN). Once in London, you can take a combination of buses, the London Underground and the train out to Henley-on-Thames.
Local bus service to neighboring towns such as Reading is provided by Arriva. No service by the major bus companies such as National Express or MegaBus
If you are already in the region you can take the drive. Just use a service like Google Maps for directions.
Where To Stay
This town does not have a large selection of hotels, but the ones it does are quite local and charming. Popular ones are The Red Lion Hotel, the Imperial Hotel (my favorite) and The Catherine Wheel.

There are plenty of places to eat both on the High Street (main street) and by the banks of the Thames.

What To Do
This a walking town. Just walk along the Thames and enjoy what it has to offer. There are lots of locals walking their dogs and joggers along the Thames Footpath. There’s also the Lock where you can watch the boats pass. In the summertime, there is the Henley Royal Regatta which is one of the largest regattas in the world.
You may also take a boat ride down the Thames.
