26. Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, Scotland, United Kingdom
Why Kirkwall, Orkney Islands Scotland
This is one of the most remote places you’ll perhaps visit and some of the friendliest people as well. And also very welcoming. I actually went to Kirkwall as I flew the world’s shortest flight from Papa Wray to West Ray; its only two minutes. The flight originates in Kirkwall sso I decided to get an extra day in. I was not disappointed. Here’s the video of the shortest commercial flight in the world.
Kirkwall is located in the Orkney Islands which is in Scotland. United Kingdom. It’s way up there.
How To Get Here
Not really. Well, you can take a combination of train, bus and ferry to make the journey. Start here or use google maps as well.
The Orkney Ferries will take you throughout the islands. You will have to get to Kirkwall first though :-). You can find details at http://www.orkneyferries.co.uk/. The next time I go back I will spend some more time.
The Kirkwall has its own airport and is the aerial gateway to the Orkney Islands.
The following airlines has service to Kirkwall Airport (KOI):
flybe. (BE) and Loganair (LM).
No buses here either, its combination of rail and buses to make the journey here from the U.K. mainland. Once here there are local buses and one goes right to the airport. The town is small so you can walk everywhere.
As its group of islands, its quite the adventure to get here by car. It’s a combination of ferries. Just use a service like Google Maps for directions.
Where To Stay
I stayed at the Ayre Hotel, which is a very nice place; cozy and comfy. There are other places in town as well, such as the Kirkwall Hotel.

Where To Eat
Lots of fish and chips here with a very local flavor. Just walk around the town and find a place that you like. You can’t go wrong really.
Also, ensure you get some Orkney ice cream, yes there is such a thing.
What To Do
Kirkwall is a walking town and if you get a chance you can walk out of the town towards the airport where there are some nice homes. It takes about 15 minutes by the local bus to the airport if you prefer that.
Check out the churches, the harbor area and watch the ferry leave for some of the other islands. Go to http://www.orkneyferries.co.uk/ for additional details.
The Bishop’s and Earl’s Palaces is a must see.
