112. Ponta Delgada, Azores, São Miguel Portugal
Why Ponta Delgaga?
Ponta Delgada on San Miguel Islands in the Azores is a pretty amazing place. It’s like taking a stop in the Atlantic Ocean on your way to Europe from the U.S. I mean the flight from there to London is almost four hours! It’s an island with beautiful caves, landscape and a lot of things to do. And of course you can just not do anything as well.
Ponta Delgada is the largest city in the Azores and on the island of São Miguel. It’s a region that is owned by the Portuguese. São Miguel island is one of nine that make up the Azores.
How To Get Here
Atlantico Line provides ferry service between the islands. Service to Ponta Delgada is seasonal due to its distance from the other islands and the trends.
The island is served by the Aeroporto de Ponta Delgada João Paulo II International Airport (PDL). Azore Airlines formerly SATA is the local carrier.
The following airlines serve the Aeroporto de Ponta Delgada João Paulo II International Airport (PDL):
Delta Airlines (DL), EasyJet Airlines (U2), Jetairfly (TB), NIKI (HG), Ryanair (FR), SATA Air Acores (SP), SATA International (S4) and TAP Portugal (TP).
There are local buses on the island, plus a bus that takes you from the airport to the city.
You can rent a car once on the island. Just use a service like Google Maps for directions. Note that the streets are very small, so ensure safe driving.
Where To Stay
You won’t find the larger hotels chains here. Just local flavors with island charms. Here’s one I found Thomas Hostel, but its not a hostel in the true sense of the word as its single rooms with ensuite toilets. You can find other hotels as well.

Where To Eat
As Ponta Delgaga is on an island, São Miguel, seafood is the norm here. Of course you can get other food types too. Pastry is everywhere.
