You hear all kinds of things about Johannesburg, mostly not so good. But I encourage you to go and check out Sandton, a suburb of Johannesburg. You’ll be pleasantly surprised. It’s not the Jo’Burg you hear about all the time.
Sandton is a suburb in the Johannesburg area of South Africa.
How To Get Here
There is rail service between Johannesburg and Sandton. Actually Sandton has a pretty amazing rail station, so check it out when you visit. You can also get there by the train from the airport. It’s a bit pricey at $25 round trip though.
The nearest airport is the O. R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg, South Africa. The home of South African Airways and Kulula.

You my take a minibus used mostly by the locals. It holds about 12 to 16 passengers. There’s also the BRT local buses that runs from Johannesburg.
If you are already in the region you can take the drive. Just use a service like Google Maps for directions.
Where To Stay
There are many places to stay in the area, including IHG properties, Hilton and Radisson Blu properties. If you’d like you may also stay at the airport.

Where To Eat
Sandton have some pretty amazing restaurants. One of the most popular is Nando’s.
There is also a place where the local people go to eat. It’s right next to the train/bus station. You can get a local meal there for not too much.
What To Do
The Johannesburg Tourist Office is actually in Sandton right in the Library. So if you want information, you can just pop into the Library. You should visit the Library anyways as its a very nice design, plus you may learn something about the town.
The Library is actually right on Nelson Mandela Square which has a huge larger than life statue of the man himself. You’ll see many people taking photos with him too.
