Why
In 1963, a four-year competition ended to name the townships southwest of Johannesburg; The name “Soweto” was the winner. The name actually means “South Western Townships.” It’s a place rich in history and the home of Nelson Mandela.

What To Do
Soweto is the home of Nelson Mandela and his house still stands and you can pay it a visit. It’s weird walking into his bedroom, but very special. You can also check out a performance at the 450-seat Soweto Theatre. In addition to other attractions there’s the Hector Pietersen Museum, who was the first victim of the Soweto uprising.
